Burckhardt laby compressor designated for Monoethylene Glycol Plant

October 23, 2017
Burckhardt Compression’s Laby labyrinth piston compressor will be a part of the United States’ largest Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) plant.

The company said it will deliver the compressor as part of a reclaim compressor system, which includes an electric motor drive, skid-mounted oil system and skid-mounted water console with a standalone air-cooled heat exchanger.

The MEG plant, located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is part of a larger project that calls for an ethane cracker facility. The Laby compressor, which can provide 17,747 lb./hr (8050 kg/h) of process gas at 305 psi (21 bar), is designed to compress gases that are dry, dirty or abrasive. It also features the labyrinth sealing system on its piston and piston rod gland, which enables oil-free and contact-free compression.

Monoethylene glycol is a key ingredient for industrial and consumer goods, such as textile, fibers, paper, adhesives and antifreeze. The MEG plant, which will be operation in 2019, will have an annual capacity of 700,000 tons (635,029 tonnes).
